Selma was born in Steyr, Austria in 1890. During the First World War she joined her younger sister in the Arts and Crafts school in Munich. They shared a small apartment/studio where they fabricated embroidered pillows and fancy ribbons. Later on in Prague she earned money by making leather gloves and handbags.

Her son Ben wrote of her that “she was a beautiful woman … loved fashion, was artistic and a great Viennese cook”.
