Zdenko Bergmann, the uncle of our father, was born August 25th, 1895, did never marry and was employed as a bank official, where he worked for 20 years. He had to leave the bank in 1939, due to the changed times, and received a fine recommendation from his employer for his skills, intelligence, diligence and carefulness.
Zdenko served during World War I as a decorated lieutenant and had a small silver plate in his scull due to an injury. This was the seed of a very nice tradition in our family, as he liked to be scratched there, which our father did. Zdenko had some kind of soft spot for our father and was tickling our father at the neck and at the back of his head. This turned into a lovely tradition with tickling at the back between our father and us four kids.
Zdenko kept writing letters to our father after he was sent to Denmark which suddenly stopped in 1942, where he as brother to Hilda Bondy was arrested, trialed and executed for a possible connection to the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich in May 1942.
Zdenko is memorized at the National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror together with 100 others proud Czech citizens who assisted the resistance.
We are here to honor Zdenko Bergmann mainly for the dedicated person he was for the family and the society and what he did for his nephew – our father.
