Hilda Bondy or Bergmann, the aunt of our father, was born June 8th, 1887, and later married to Alex Bondy. They had two sons: Jiri and Karel Bondy. Jiri married Lydia. Alex and Jiri were both doctors, Karel studied medicine and Lydia was a nurse.
Hilda must have been a marvelous woman as she took care of her own family as well as being an anchor for the wider family for shabbat and other Jewish holydays.
Hilda was the oldest of four siblings – she was the older sister from 1887 to three brothers; Quido from 1889 (our grandfather), Leo from 1893 who was killed in World War I and Zdenko from 1895.
Hilda stood up for what she believed was right and paid the ultimate price when she and her family assisted the Czech resistance during nazi-occupation by a small contribution to Operation Anthropoid; the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich in May 1942. The Bondy family were arrested, trialed and executed – all on the same day; October 24th 1942.
Hilda is memorized at the National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror together with 100 others proud Czech citizens who assisted the resistance.
We are here to honor Hilda Bondy, who was born Bergmann mainly for the person she was but also for what she did for the family and for her fight for freedom and humanity.
