Karolina Auguste Dorothea Fischel, always known as Dora, was born in Prague, the youngest of three sisters.

She worked on a newspaper, the Prager Tageblatt and lived with her family, including my mother Kate, her niece. My mother remembered, ‘She was always fun. I loved her. For me she was very important because she was always very good and nice to me and treated me as a proper person, not like a child all the time. She had a great sense of humour. But she never got married and it was considered that she would look after her mother, as the unmarried daughter. That’s why she stayed behind.’ In August 1939, my mother who was then 19 and in England telephoned her for the last time. ‘I always remember my aunt saying to me – at that time it was already very dicey in Prague and people were leaving – and she said ‘I would be quite happy to come to England as a maid‘, and there was I, I couldn’t do anything, and forever I can’t forgive myself for it and I said, ‘but I don’t know of anywhere,’ and I knew that she was trying to get out.’

Dora was transported to Terezin on August 3rd 1942 and then to Riga on August 20th, 1942 where she was murdered.
