In Prague, on 31 October 2022 three Stolpersteine were installed in front of Wolkerova 565/10 in memory of Julie Taussigová, Marietta Taussigová, and Jaromír Taussig. Karel Taussig and Julie Taussigová were listed as the first owners of Wolkerova 565/10 on 1 March 1928, and the family always called it their Villa. Karel was the son of a butcher and worked as a representative of the Schicht Company. He also served as the Agricultural Commissioner of Prague. Karel died of natural causes in April of 1937. Karel and Julie had four children. Františka emigrated to the United States in 1939 with her husband, Zikmund Kühnreich, and their son, Jiří. Vladimír left Europe in 1933. Their remaining two children, Jaromír and Marietta, remained with their mother at the villa following their father’s death.
Julie and Marietta were transported to Terezín on 20 June 1942. By this time, they had been relocated to four different housing locations. Julie passed away of “natural causes” on 25 June 1943 in Terezín. Marietta was sent East on 6 September 1943. If she survived the transport, and the ensuing six months in Birkenau’s Czech Family Camp, she would have been destined for mass extermination on 8 March 1944.
More detailed information about the family is contained in a biography of Vladimír, The Suitcase: The Life and Times of Captain X, slated for publication by Earnshaw Books in 2023. A website containing additional information and photographs is available at www.readthesuitcase.com.
