Mary was born in Bielsko-Biała, Poland in 1921. Her mother, Selma, would refer to her as ein Musterkind (a perfect child). She went to the School for Women’s Occupations in Podskalká Street, Prague – its goal was to train women to be good housewives. In October 1941 she married Jan Winter, who was murdered in Majdanek in 1942.
