Otto Hahn’s story begins with his family. His parents Adolf Hahn and Marie Novak were married 15 May 1873 in Prague. That same year, Adolf established his first business, the Adolf Hahn Company, which specialized in import and export.
Adolf and Marie had eight children. Malvina, Ida, Paul, Elsa, Olga, Otto, Irma, and Adele. This family was active in the Jewish community in Prague. Adolf served on the board of the Jubilee – Jerusalem Temple and was involved in several charities. Otto was educated as a lawyer. At the time of Adolf’s death, Otto was employed as co-head of his father’s business in Prague.
Otto married Mariane Glaser Kielhauser in Graz, Austria, 22 December 1919. They divorced several years later.
Of the eight Hahn siblings, five survived the war in various parts of the world. Otto’s older sister Elsa who fled to France in 1939, was deported from Lyon to Auschwitz in 1944 where she was murdered. Paul and his wife, Angela, were deported from Trieste in 1944 to Auschwitz – murdered 1944. Paul and Angela’s Stolpersteine were installed in January 2026 at Via della Zonta 9.
